Hallo, this is Johan, Arie and Willem.
We are brothers and all have Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy. We are 15, 18 and 19 years old respectively. We live in a small village in a ground floor bungalow. We all go to high school. During the week our parents have to get up at 5 am to get us out the door on time. Thankfully we do have some extra help in the mornings. Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy is carried in our family. We can get older than is usual with this condition because we have had an operation on our backs. Arie and Willem are on a ventilator overnight. In the future we will need access to extra air also. It comes in a bottle at the back of the wheelchair. If you have difficulty breathing you can use some oxigen. At a later stage we will probably require a tracheostomy. You don't breathe yourself then, but a machine does it for you. This machine can do suction of mucus also. Our hobbies are computers, computer games, television and watching videos and at school playing sport. We like wheelchair hockey the best. Willem finishes school this year and after the summer holidays he will be going to a daycentre.
Ruud has promised to try and give the centre a WX5 on loan so he can continue to play music. We all have individual music therapy with Ruud. Johan and Arie like learning new songs. Willem likes to improvise existing songs. " I never thought I could do this, I look forward to it every week."
Johan (the youngest) uses both hands. Willem uses materials from the hardwarestore. A paintroller, a clamb and some PVC tubing. Hear Willem improvice on a jazz-theme.
